Artwork of the day: Imagine Peace Tower
The Imagine Peace Tower (2007) in Viðey Island is now illuminated until Friday March 26th. The timing corresponds with the day Yoko Ono and John Lennon got married in 1969. That day, the 20th of March, is also the day of March equinox – which marks the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator – from south to north. The March equinox has long been celebrated as a time of rebirth in the Northern Hemisphere.
The light of the Imagine Peace Tower can be seen from Reykjavik and also on livestream here: http://imaginepeacetower.com/
Imagine Peace Tower is a work of art conceived by the legendary artist, musician and peace advocate Yoko Ono (b. 1933) as a beacon to world peace. The work is in the form of a wishing well, on which the words ‘Imagine Peace’ are inscribed in 24 world languages. Out of the well emerges a strong, tall tower of light that is composed of a number of individual lights that join together to form a single beam.
