Artwork of the day: Blonde Nurses
Artwork of the day is Blonde Nurses from 1998-2000 by Birgir Snæbjörn Birgisson (1966).
The image looks overexposed and as if the pale colour is dissolving from the canvas. The colour treatment indicates that the image is a memory, but at the same time it can refer to the sterilised surroundings which nurses work in, which leads to the idea of purity. The artist describes how, following a remark made by a British MP about too many blond nurses in British hospitals, his interest in stereotypical ideas of blond hair, Nordic looks, racism and ideas of purity was awakened.
