Gallery Talk on Tapies. Kjarvalsstaðir, Sunday 15 Apríl 3 p.m.

Dr. Margrét Jónsdóttir Njarðvík and art historian Rebekka Rán Samper participate in a gallery talk on the work of Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies (1923–2012) focusing on Catalan history and culture. Tapies was born in 1923 to Josep Tapies Mestres, a Republican atheist, and Maria Puig Guerra, a devout Roman Catholic. The family remained in Barcelona during the Civil War, enduring Franco's attacks and bombing of Barcelona, an experience which would inform and influence his oeuvre.

The exhibition Image, Body, Pathos currently on view at Kjarvalsstaðir shows paintings from more than seven decades of the impressive creative oeuvre of the artist. Born in Barcelona in 1923, Tàpies had a distinct influence on European painting in the second half of the 20th century.

The talk takes place in Icelandic.
